Ab Na Jaibo Babur Ban Mein by The Ganesh Kirtan group

Before a woman gets married, she is the child at her parents house and recives the most dular (pamper). However, after being married she goes to live with her husband’s family where papmering is not the order of the day. She now is expected to do the domestic duties of the house, much to her dismay, while looking on at the carefree nonchalant manner the rest of the house hold carries themselves about with not much concern for her. In this song from the archives of Naresh Teemal, she describes her in-law’s as a thick babul forest with thornes that pierce. Here is the translation:

अब ना जइबो बबुर बन
Ab nā jaibo babur ban
(Not going into the babul forest)
Kāṭwā gaṛh jāi
(There thorns stick you)

Ohī re babur ban paṛ gail hinḍulanā
(In that forest hangs a swing)
Sāsu jhulāwe sasuiyā ke jiyarā jar gail hamār
(On which my father-in-law rocks my mother-in-law and it drives me up a wall)

Ohī re babur ban paṛ gail hinḍulanā
(In that forest hangs a swing)
Jeṭhā jhulāwe jeṭhniyā ke jiyarā jar gail hamār
(On which my older brother-in-law rocks my older sister-in-law and it drives me up a wall)

Ohī re babur ban paṛ gail hinḍulanā
(In that forest hangs a swing)
Devar jhulāwe devraniyā ke jiyarā jar gail hamār
(On which my younger brother-in-law rocks my younger sister-in-law and it drives me up a wall )

Ohī re babur ban paṛ gail hinḍulanā
(In that forest hangs a swing)
Saiyā jhulāwe sawatiyā ke jiyarā jar gail hamār
(On which my beloved rocks his mistress and it drives me up a wall)
