Anari Raja Lyrics & Meaning

Here is a classic song done at weddings to tease the bridegroom. It was originally done by the Ganesh Kirtan group, a group of women who sang folk songs. It is a taunt to the bridegroom calling him an inexperienced king (double entendre for a virgin) and warning him not to pick the limes in the garden representative of the bride (who is quite tangy and tantalizing). It goes on to explain how members of the family forbid picking the limes, but interestingly the last verse says the husband of the one who sings the song and his mistress forbids picking the lime. In trying to forbid it they were not successful as the bride is now being married to the groom.

This song is sung at weddings and is of a light jovial mood of having and making fun.

Anāṛī rājā nibulā, nā tūro, nā tūro, nā
(Oh inexperienced king, don’t pick the limes)

Sās more baraje sasur more baraje
(My mother in-law and father-in-law forbid it)
Wā baraje nā
(Why do you dare to defy)
Vo barajat hār gayo ho
(In forbiding it they were disobeyed)

Jeṭh more baraje jeṭhānī more baraje
(My older brother-in-law and sister-in-law forbid it)
Wā baraje nā
(Why do you dare to defy)
Vo barajat hār gayo ho
(In forbiding it they were disobeyed)

Devar more baraje devrānī more
(My younger brother-in-law and sister-in-law forbid it)
Wā baraje nā
(Why do you dare to defy)
Vo barajat hār gayo ho
(In forbiding it they were disobeyed)

Saiyā more bajare sawat more baraje
(My husband and his mistress forbid it)
Wā baraje nā
(Why do you dare to defy)
Vo barajat hār gayo ho
(In forbiding it they were disobeyed)
