Migration of the Madrassi Indians to Trinidad

The migration of the Madrassi Indians to Trinidad started in 1846 and continued until 1873. The migration then again in 1906 to 1916. Reference: Eight East Indian Immigrants. Written by Father Anthony de Verteuil, C.S.Sp.

When I traveled to Trinidad in 2010, I was able to verify this through the National Archives in Port of Spain as I was researching the Madrassi side of my family. The reason for the post is that many thought migration of Madrassi Indians came to a halt in the 1860s! This was not true and I wanted to share this with the group.

My Great Grandfather, Narayanasami Naidu, his first wife Alamelu, their son Veeraghavalu, my great grandfather’s sister Atchiamma and my great uncle Muniappa Chettiar all came to Trinidad aboard the SS indus on the 15th of January 1906. Please see below:
