Sohar Geet

This is a popular Sohar that describes the scene at Ram Navami (The Birth of Ram). Like most Sohars, sung at Chhati (sixth day) and Barahi (twelfth day) after a child’s birth, it bears reference to Ram or Krishna’s birth.

जै तिथि नवमी हो तिथि हो नौबत बाजत हो
(On ninth date of Chait the drums of celebration ring out)
बाजे दसरत राज द्वारे कौसिलिया रानी मंदिर हो
(Celebrations ring out at king Dasharath’s door and queen Kaushalya’s temple)

सब मिले सखिया-सहेली, सब मिले चली आवे हो
(All the women folk meet up and come)
जहाँ कौसिलिया के प्रगट है राम तनी निउछावार हो
(Where Kaushalya’s son Ram took birth to decorate him)

भीतरी से निकली कौसिलिया रानी दुवरिया पे ठारे हो
(From inside queen Kaushalya came out standing at the door)
रमा दय दय हीर दय लगावे करि है निउछावार हो
(Looking at them deocrate baby Ram like a diamond)

कोई लावे बचुपनदर कोई लावे कजरावत हो
(Someone applies body paint another khol)
कोई लैल दखिनवा के छीर करि है निउछावार हो
(Someone brought an offering decor and applied to the child)

राम के नरकजराए, हो नरकजराए, हो नरकजराए हो
(Ram’s khol……………………………………)
रमा रचदी है फूवा सुभद्रा पटरिया अँगुरिया हो
(His paternal aunt Subhadra decorating his fingers)

राम के मथवा के चन्दिनिया बड़ी निक लगाल हो
(On Ram’s forehead is the chandan that looks so splendid)
रच दीनी है गुरुवा बसिस्त अति गन आँगन हो
(Guru diksha from Vashishta resulted from his good qualities)

रमा के हथवा लुदुइया बड़ी बनी सोहे हो
(Ram’s bracelet looks so beautiful)
जैसे फूलन बीच अकिलिया अति निक लगाल हो
(Like the splendor of blossoming flowers)

रामा के गोड़वा घूँघरुवा बड़ी बल सोहे हो
(Ram’s anklets so beutifully decorate)
नन्हा गोड़वा नचलत देखत राजा दसरत हो
(Innocently dancing his feet to the delights of his father kimg Dasharat)

जो ये है मंगल गावे, हो गावे के सुनावै हो
(Auspicious singing takes place relating to everyone)
रामा पूते समती धन बाड़े अमर पुर जावै हो
(Such a son Ram is born making the city immortal)
