Sohar are nativity songs offered by female singers at the birth of a sacred incarnations like Rama and Krishna. There are lullabies and cradle songs sung while devotees rock the cradle with the image of the infant deity and offer gifts. There are also sung at the birth of Hindu babies who share with their deities the same divine purity and innocence.
After birth, the family takes the infants to the waterside where mouran is performed –the baby hair is shorn form the head in purification. The child is presented to Gangamai, Mother Ganga, the Primodial Water Mother, and bathed in the sacred healing water. This bath ceremony is called Nahaan. Mauran songs belong to this occasion.
