Ramdew Chaitoe

Ramdew Chaitoe (19 December 1942 – 6 June 1994) was a Surinamese artist and a harmonium player, who released a Baithak Gana album called The King Of Suriname a.k.a The Star Melodies of Ramdew Chaitoe in 1976. Rumors exist about how Chaitoe started his career singing in jail after being arrested in a bar fight.

Ramdew grew up on a farm. His father, songwriter/lyricist and harmonium instrumentalist Pundit Shastrie Sewpersad Chaitoe, was a considerable influence on Ramdew, inaugurating his son early in the musical art form, by having him perform weekly at Hindu temple ceremonies. This allowed the young Chaitoe to become skilled at his craft, thus allowing him to perform with the top singers and composers in Suriname as he matured. Throughout his travels in the Caribbean, Chaitoe acquired a strong reputation as a skilled harmonium player and singer. Ramdew Chaitoe traveled from the West Indies to Europe, and also had a show in New York.

In 1976, Chaitoe released The King Of Suriname a.k.a The Star Melodies of Ramdew Chaitoe. This album is considered to be the first Baithak Gana album ever in Suriname. Moreover, due to the exposure that he received from this album, Chaitoe became a household name not just in Suriname but in the Indo-Caribbean world as well. In the popular manner of composition at the time, Chaitoe composed this album with religious and folk songs from the Purvanchal-Bhojpur, and Awadh regions of the present-day states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India. These songs, like blue bhajans, captivated audiences with Chaitoe’s artistic trend not just in Suriname but all over the Indo-Caribbean community. Chaitoe is regarded as one of the best singers of the Caribbean genre of Baithak Gana, which is still seen as the authoritative music genre in the Hindustani community. Though on the evening of June 6, 1994, Ramdew Chaitoe’s life was cut short of a massive heart attack during his sleep in his home in Rotterdam, he left behind dozens of pieces of music for his thousands of fans throughout the Indo-Caribbean world. He suffered from alcoholism. Chaitoe is outlived by his son Pradeep Chaitoe, who is carrying on his legacy and tradition of singing and a sister Bidjanwatie Chaitoe, who is also a singer.

Ramdew Chaitoe werd geboren op 19 december 1942 te Leiding 19 in Paramaribo te Suriname als de zoon van Sewpersad (Shastri) Chaitoe (†) en Sumintra Dhanradjsingh (†). Ramdew Chaitoe begon in de jaren 50 al op zeer jonge leeftijd harmonium te spelen in Roshnie Nari Sangeet Samaadj vanwege de muzikale betrokkenheid van zijn moeder bij deze formatie.
In zijn jongere jaren was Ramdew Chaitoe naast een muzikant ook een worstelaar van formaat en stond hij te boek als talentvolle voetballer. Des te meer de jonge Ramdew zijn muzikale vaardigheden op de harmonium verbeterde, des te meer hij trok naar het zingen van film nummers en zijn interesse in het worstelen en voetballen afzwakte.
Eind jaren 60 deed Ramdew zijn intrede in het populaire zondagse Baithak Gana programma van radio Rapar onder leiding van presentator Rashied Pierkhan (†). Door zijn wekelijkse deelnames aan het programma werd de rijzende ster Ramdew Chaitoe steeds meer en meer een begrip in de wereld van Baithak Gana.
Vanwege zijn toenemende naamsbekendheid richtte Ramdew Chaitoe begin jaren 70 zijn eigen muziek formatie, genaamd Roshnie Sangeet Samaadj op. Zijn liederen werden in de begin jaren van Roshnie Sangeet Samaadj door zijn vader geschreven en uiteindelijk begon Ramdew zelf zijn nummers te schrijven en componeren. Dit resulteerde in 1976 tot zijn eerste plaat “The Star Melodies of Ramdew Chaitoe” met het immens populaire nummer “Ek Haath Me Desh Ke
Jhanda” en de single met het minstens even populaire “Raate Sapna”. Door het succes van deze liederen werd zijn gevestigde naam tot veel grotere hoogtes gebracht en werd hij gevraagd voor buitenlandse shows en zangcontesten.
Na al deze successen verhuisde Ramdew Chaitoe in 1980 naar Nederland en kreeg hij van de Nederlandse platenmaatschappij Dureco twee gouden platen uitgereikt voor de nummers “Ek Haath Me Desh Ke Jhanda” en “Raate Sapna”. Door zijn aanhoudende succes heeft hij ook Shows in onder andere Amerika, Canada en de Caraïben gegeven en heeft hij voor zijn entourage daar een blijvende herinnering achter gelaten.
In zijn muzikale carriere heeft Ramdew met diverse grote artiesten samengewerkt, waaronder Arjun Autar, Mahender Sewnandan, Hary Sewbalak, Sehadat Chedi, Radjoe Sewgolam, diverse anderen en natuurlijk zijn jongere zus Bidjanwatie Chaitoe.
Onder zijn eigen label “Chaitoe Productions” heeft hij voor zijn fans in totaal 10 langspeelplaten, 4 singles en 6 CD’s achtergelaten zodat wij kunnen blijven genieten van zijn unieke muzikale kwaliteiten en zijn inspirerende teksten.
Ramdew Chaitoe is op 06-06-1994 op 52 jarige leeftijd vroegtijdig heen gegaan maar is er in unieke wijze in geslaagd dat zijn naam nooit zal worden vergeten.
