Devashish Ramdath is a 24-year-old young man who resides in Chaguanas. He lives with both parents (retired) whom he considers as the pillars in his life. He graduated from UWI in 2019 and now holds a bachelor’s degree in Geomatics Engineering. He currently works as a Data Conversion Officer at a GIS company based in UWI. His interest in music came about at an early age, where he learned to play the Tabla at the tender age of six (6). From then with this gift from God, he continued to learn the art of playing various traditional musical instruments by himself. He has been a Dholak player for the last nine (9) years, and for the last five (5) years he has been singing and accompanying himself on the Harmonium and occasionally the Dholak. Devashish started singing because he had an undying love for “Local Classical Songs” and a lot of people expressed their views such as “You have the ideal voice for Classical and Chutney songs” which also motivated him and over the past 5 years he ventured into singing bhajans, classical, chutney and film songs. He was given his stage name by D.J. Sheriff which is entitled “Deva Raja” which chooses to abide by. Devashish firmly believes that sincerity and humility can allow a person to soar to great heights, and so he continues to pursue his musical career with that same trait and he thinks that he should be the Sangeet Chutney Cup Champion 2020 because he has been striving really hard over the past five (5) years and thus has a lot to offer to the industry such as Original and Clean Lyrics (Hindi/Bhojpuri and English), Original Melodies and most importantly he aims to stick to our roots and culture in keeping “Ground Singing” alive.

Ria SookdeoMy Name is Ria Sookdeo (stage name is Ria). I hailed from the beautiful vibrant and talented village of Sangre Grande. I was born and raised in a family of eight siblings with me being the sixth child. Both my parents are alive and has always been a great support. Being in love with music my whole life, I diverted to Indian culture as both my singing and dancing career began at a tender age. I am also an Indian dancer along with my sisters who has an east indian dance group. Being a dancer and a devotee of the temple it ignited my passion for singing. I started singing at weekly temple services then eventually my parents took the initiative to enrolled me in an east Indian band in Sangre Grande where I later started performing at weddings, functions and parties. I also participated in many competitions such as Mastana Bahar and Children’s of Mastana (1st place winner). This was my first year recording and releasing a song which was written by Mr. Kenneth Seepersad. I think I should be the Chutney Cup Champion because the concept of singing has been around since the beginning of time. Even before civilization came to exist, one of the forms of communication was seen to be done via singing. Even Today, in every culture, be it our modern, developed cultures, or nomadic, tribal cultures, the significance of singing still holds its place. The chutney art form is dying and if given the opportunity I’ll showcase my talent locally and internationally so chutney music can be a part of our everyday lives and the younger generation will be knowledgeable about it.

Rishi Nowbutt is an attorney at Law by Profession and was a former Full time Commissioner at the Environmental Court of Trinidad and Tobago. He is also a Part-time Business Law Lecturer and Part time Radio Presenter.Mr. Nowbutt, only started music less than a year ago with the first song being a collaboration with Reshma Ramlal called Dekha Na Hai (Boywood Cover). After that song because of the amount of air play, this motivated Mr. Nowbutt to record 5 more songs one of which was a collaboration a with the Hurricane Heamlata caller Avinnashi. Also, Mr Nowbutt recorded his first solo orginal traditional chutney song call MAUSUM HAI SUHANA.Music happen by accident for Mr. Nowbutt as he only recorded his first song to make a point to someone and never expected to even have the song release on radio. However, that all changed and now music as sort of taken over his life. Sometimes while he is in court he would be planning his next song in his head. Music is a form of relaxation for Mr. Nowbutt to distract him from the daily pressures of life and work.Mr. Nowbutt also had the opertunity to perform in Oklahoma recently and in West Palm Beach in Florida in late 2019.Mr. Nowbutt should win the Sangeet chutney Cup because his song is an original traditional chutney song that is in pure Hindi with no english. Also, the song is based on love, loyalty and respect. For Mr. Nowbutt to win the Sangeet Chutney Cup this would mean the world to him because it would be a major achievement because he only started music within a year.Traditional chutney music is a dying art form and it should be Preserved. Radio have power. Radio have the power to influence people, thus traditional chutney should be promoted. Sangeet 106.1fm have the power to influence listeners especially the young people to appreciate orginal chutney music.I thank you.
