Saraswati Dwaadasha Stotram: My cultural heritage!
These were verses I learned from my Mamoo, Pt. Sinananan Maharaj, at the age of 11. I dreamt him last night in the room where he taught me to read and write Hindi. On the wall facing the table where my lessons were conducted was a painting of Mother Saraswati (Goddess of speech, melody and knowledge). So, Vivid!
It touched me so I had to dedicate this post to both of them this morning. Om Sadgati Pundit Mamoo and Saraswati Namastubhyam!
शुक्लां ब्रह्मविचार सार परमामाद्यां जगद्व्यापिनीं
(Oh fair one, essence of Brahman, one who pervades the universe)
वीणा-पुस्तक-धारिणीमभयदां जाड्यान्धकारापहाम्‌।
(Bearer of the Veena and Vedas, dispenser of fearlessness and remover of ignorance)
हस्ते स्फाटिकमालिकां विदधतीं पद्मासने संस्थिताम्‌
(Holder of the Sphatik rosary in her hand, seated on a Lotus)
वन्दे तां परमेश्वरीं भगवतीं बुद्धिप्रदां शारदाम्‌॥2॥
(The source of all intellect, to that Mother Saraswati I bow before you)
प्रथमं भारती नाम, द्वितीयं च सरस्वती ।
(First you are Earth, the motherland that sustains us and second the one that flows)
तृतीयं शारदा देवी, चतुर्थं हंसवाहिनी ॥
(Third you are autumnal, forth the rider of the swan)
पञ्चमं जगती ख्याता, षष्ठं वागीश्वरी तथा ।
(Fifth the Zenith of all creation and sixth the goddess of expression)
सप्तमं कौमुदी प्रोक्ता, अष्टमं ब्रहचारिणी ॥
(Seventh the one who signifies the moonlight, a devoted student of the god of creation)
नवमं बुद्धिदात्री च, दशमं वरदायिनी ।
(Ninth the one who bestows intelligence and tenth bestowed of blessings)
एकादशं चन्द्रकान्तिः, द्वादशं भुवनेश्वरी ॥
(Eleventh the bearer of the crescent moon, twelfth the goddess of the earth realm)
द्वादशैतानि नामानि त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नरः ।
(These twelve names of the goddess)
जिह्वाग्रे वसते नित्यं ब्रह्म रूपा सरस्वती ॥
(Whosoever recites attains divine vision)
